Te Māhuri

This is a time when tamariki are really busy, interested and active.

Getting started

As tamariki get older they'll play more with other kids and friendships become important. They will have lots of energy, enjoy adventures and try out new things. They'll be able to cope with more difficult challenges, but sometimes they can be too confident. They really enjoy talking about themselves, and telling stories about their day. They will test boundaries and watch for reactions.

You can:

  • be clear about what is expected of them
  • give lots of praise when they try hard
  • have rules and limits (not lots) and stick to them
  • encourage them to give new things a go
  • build their confidence by giving them little jobs to do
  • act calm when you do have to discipline them
  • support and encourage them to work out solutions to problems
  • reassure them if they are scared or frightened - remember how you feel when you're scared.

Te Māhuri booklets will be available soon. So watch this space.
