Social media

There are three social media tools which are used to start conversations. Before you decide what to use think about what you are trying to do and the time you have to keep things going.

Think about what your audiences wants, not what you want. If you offer them something of value they are more likely to keep following you online.

People using social media are pretty smart – and will quickly lose interest in you if all you do in promote yourself. Give them interesting content and links and they’ll keep coming back.

You might not need to start your own Facebook page or blog. Have a look at where your audiences go and post blogs there. Tell them about your plans, invite feedback, be open.

Ask the parents you work with for ideas. Some of them might already be active on parenting blogs and be able to help you get your messages out.

If you want to set up your own social media tools you could look at:

Blogs

A blog is a website where entries or posts are listed in chronological order. Blogs commonly allow for readers to provide comments that are posted along with the original entry.

There are lots of blogs set up by parents which track their family life.

This blog tells stories from a parent's perspective

These aren't so good for promoting your organisation, but you could encourage parents you support to get involved in a blog.

If you want to interact with parents there are bigger blogs, which often hang off websites,

For example, this blog is run by Huggies.

Social networking

Social networking is a way of connecting with other people and groups. Facebook is now the most commonly used social networking tool. A Facebook page is easy to set up and if you make it interesting people will find you through people promoting your page for you.

The Auckland Women's Centre Single Mums group runs a Facebook page to promote events, share tips, and encourage participation:

Microblogging

This is a type of blogging where users write brief and frequent updates and publish them on microblogging platforms. One of the most common of these is Twitter. Users can tweet online or by text, instant messaging or email.

Combining tools

Many bloggers send out a tweet when they have written a new post. They usually include a link through to the blog. You can also link your blog to your Facebook page.

Getting started

The best way to get started with social media is to sign up and have a look around. Look at how people write on blogs, send tweets, use their Facebook page. Start slowly and build confidence and away you go.

You need to make sure you engage with your social media channels regularly – or people will stop following you. Things you alert your followers to could be:

  • links to interesting stories
  • tips
  • little known facts
  • relevant statistics
  • top 10 lists
  • opinions
  • changes in your organisation
  • events coming up.

Tips for success:

  • find a voice - try not to be too formal
  • use humour
  • tell the truth
  • enjoy yourself
  • play
  • be curious and share what you discover.

If you get negative comments make sure you respond quickly and politely. Don't forget millions of people will see if you aren't open and honest...
