Facebook: Connecting single mums in Auckland

18 January 2012

The Auckland Women’s Centre is using a Facebook page to connect single mums, share SKIP strategies and promote upcoming events.

The page was created to raise awareness of the initiatives available for single mums in Auckland. It is used to share SKIP parenting strategies and to promote upcoming events. For example, in the build-up to Guy Fawkes weekend, the Facebook updates linked the dangers of fireworks back to the SKIP Children and Safety brochure. The message was to have fun but keep children a safe distance away from lighting fireworks and to keep lighters/matches and candles out of reach.

During November, the Centre adapted the “5+ a Day” fruit and vegetables campaign to promote “5+ a Day thanks and praise”. This offered positive ways to thank and praise your child each day, and suggested parents aim to do so five or more times a day. Examples were shared regularly on the Facebook page and were based on the six principles of effective discipline.

The page is used as a channel to engage with single mums in Auckland to promote workshops, Positively Single Mums events, and low-cost family friendly events in smaller communities.

The Single Mums Facebook page also links to the SKIP Mum page and often “shares” stories, links and information relevant to single mums and parenting in general. It is updated once or twice a week, and people who ‘like’ the page are able to comment on updates and share information from the page with their friends.
