The research

SKIP is based on research about good parenting practice. Here is some of the research we have used to develop our training and resources.

The discipline and guidance of children: A summary of research

This research was carried out by the Children's Issues Centre.  It formed the basis of SKIP's six principles. These are:

  • love and warmth
  • talking and listening
  • guidance and understanding
  • limits and boundaries
  • consistency and consequences
  • structure and security

The Office of the Children's Commissioner commissioned this work. It was based on a search of published material in peer-reviewed national and international literature on family discipline.  A summary was published in 2004.

Research on working with parents

Research into working with parents has helped us to develop SKIP training and resources. We've also brought together some research that can help engage parents and families in your community.

Review of SKIP

SKIP commissioned a review of its effectiveness in 2009.
