Philosophy

SKIP understands that parents and communities know best what you need. SKIP was started after we asked communities and their families what they wanted.

SKIP's vision is for all children in New Zealand to be raised in a positive way by parents and caregivers who feel confident about managing children's behaviour as part of a loving, nurturing relationship.

Two key pieces of research have influenced how SKIP works. They are the Gravitas Research and Strategy Report and The Discipline and Guidance of Children: A Summary of Research report.

SKIP takes a community development approach. We work with community organisations that are already working locally with whānau.

We believe parents learn from their own experiences and each other. The SKIP resources are based on sharing what has worked for them.

We work with organisations to find new opportunities for whānau to talk about parenting and find their own solutions.

SKIP focuses on what to do rather than what not to do. Messages are positive and supportive, and there is no blaming. The focus is on supporting whānau to be the best parents they can.

All SKIP resources are free and available to anyone.

"SKIP is not just the resources. SKIP is not just the principles. SKIP gives parents the opportunity and the space to talk with each other about how they can be better parents." Moka Ngaro, SKIP champion.
