How SKIP works
SKIP is working to change the way children are raised in New Zealand. It is doing this by supporting communities to inspire mums and dads to have a positive relationship with their children.
Over the seven years since SKIP was launched it has grown into a nationwide network of individuals, community groups, government agencies, workplaces and national NGOs.
You don't have to apply to be part of the SKIP network. You just have to be committed to positive parenting.
A small team at the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) supports the SKIP network.
SKIP is:
- non-judgemental. We don't label parents as good or bad
- focused on the needs of everyone in the family, where they live, who they live with and their environment
- strengths-based, no one is an expert. There is no fixed set of tools or strategies
- based on relationships of trust, with parents, with communities, with organisations
- based on stories and celebrations of small change
- not a parenting programme.
How we support our network
SKIP is administered by a small team in the Ministry of Social Development, who support community groups and individuals to develop positive parenting initiatives.
