Supporting our network
SKIP is supported by a small team in the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).
The role of this team is to:
- develop and nurture new ideas
- develop and distribute resources and information
- work with national partners to develop ways to promote positive parenting
- support community initiatives
- connect and inspire people
- recognise a good idea and make it happen
- manage funding through the SKIP funding
- respond to any needs thay involve parenting – for example, the Christchurch earthquake.
Underpinning with research
SKIP is based on research. This has informed the way we work, our information and resources and our key messages.
We continue to use research to tell us if we are on the right track. This includes testing resources with parents and getting formal feedback on what’s working, and what isn’t.
The research is reflected in our three modules we’ve written for supporters of parents. These can be used:
- as the basis of staff training
- to inform or train parents
- alongside the SKIP pamphlets
- as handouts
- to develop local resources.
These cover:
- Conscious parenting
- The six principles of effective discipline
- Child development and behaviour.
You can download the three modules as PDFs, or order the booklets from us.
Information to use with parents
The SKIP team has developed a range of resources and information for using with parents. You can read the information on the website, download PDFs and Word documents, or order hardcopies from us.
