Using SKIP resources

SKIP resources can be used to encourage group participation and get people talking. Here are some ideas on ways to use SKIP information to inspire parents.

ResourcesWays to use the resources
Pamphlets and booklets
  • Choose a pamphlet and discuss how it contains the six principles of effective discipline.
  • Role play the pamphlet scenarios to get a sense of what children are thinking and feeling.
  • Familiarise parents with pamphlets by having quizzes or debates on the content.
Badges and magnets
  • Give out at the end of a session to remind parents of a key theme of that session.
  • Give three to each group and designate the scene: pub, supermarket, rugby game, school, and make up a skit involving the messages.
  • Use as prizes for children at family days to attract parents.
DVDs
  • They make good openers for workshops. They go straight to the key messages.
Posters
  • Use the six principles poster as a framework for parents to collect stories about their children.
  • Talk about how the six principles are expressed in each family or whānau.
  • Discuss how the key messages in the speech bubbles reflect the six principles.
The Warehouse Fathers Book
  • Encourage dads to look at and talk about the pictures with their kids.
  • Ask dads to pick one picture or quote they like and explain why.
Baby Wall Frieze - English/Te Reo Māori or Samoan or Cook Islands Maori
  • Stick it together as a book to look at with a baby.
  • Use frames as a heading for a baby record book.
  • Laminate each frame to use as workshop discussion starters - Consider each message and discuss... "What does it mean for me as a parent? For my child? "Why should we?" "How do we?" "How else might we?"
  • Use as an activity to discuss brain development in a workshop.
